From the June 1986 issue of the Socialist Standard
One of the most ruinous factors is the capitalist system — and this is one of the gravest criticisms that can be levelled against it. The methods of free competition and the application of the profit motive have been disastrous to the land. Throughout virtually the entire world, land is not used to produce the crop best adapted to it on a permanent basis, but to produce as much as possible as cheaply as possible, and as quickly as possible.(W. Vogt. Chief Conservation Officer, The Pan-American Union)
