John Bissett (North East Branch) will be
speaking on Emile Zola’s ‘Germinal’
Venue: 52, Clapham High Street.
Sunday 20th October 6:30 pm
Emile Zola’s 19th Century classic depicts the grim and harrowing struggle between capital and labour in the coalfields of Northern France. In Germinal, Zola plumbs the depths of the human condition, painting a picture of life in a mining community that is bestial and often insulting to our dignity but through which the humanity of the protagonists shines through like a miner's lamp in a coal seam, overall impression is not only of compassion, but of future hope for the exploited.
I'm sure there were other SPGB meetings held in October of 2002 but this is the only one I have details of immediate to hand.
