Give him a laurel wreath (1976)

From the October 1976 issue of the Socialist Standard

If you think "Labour" represents the workers — read this !
WE BACK JIM, SAY THE BOSSES

STAND BY to make Britain really GREAT again!

That was the stirring message yesterday from the Government.

It came over loud and clear after Premier James Callaghan had chaired his first meeting of Neddy— the National Economic Development Council.

It gave him the chance to give an official nudge to Britain’s push for industrial prosperity.

He made it clear that the Government plans to give top priority to manufacturing industries over the next four years.

This will mean:

MORE cash for the “top thirty industries via the National Enterprise Board at the expense of public spending cuts.

MORE investment and jobs in the long run.

A LIFE-LINE for firms waiting to re-stock and continue important projects.

BIGGER PROFITS for industry and better financial incentives for bosses.
. . . Sunny Jim’s sunny outlook was welcomed by the bosses’ “union”, the Confederation of British industry.
