‘Everything is going to get better now’, were the words of someone celebrating on the streets of Serbia after that country’s election results were announced this week. The populist Vučić government was being replaced by the opposition ‘Student List’, a party with ’ordinary people’ as candidates, including doctors, actors, academics and sports personalities.
We can’t doubt their sincerity, but we also know that, once they find themselves having to manage the host of competing interests intrinsic to capitalism, their good intentions will run into the same roadblock as all parties that try to govern that system.
And so it will continue – not just in Serbia but world-wide – until we collectively bring in a new society of voluntary production for need, moneyless, stateless and leaderless – the society we call socialism.
