Letter: From a feminist (1985)

Letter to the Editors from the September 1985 issue of the Socialist Standard

From a feminist

Dear Editors,

So the sixth Duke of Westminster is a "nondescript" because he has only two "O" levels (July issue) yet academic examinations are just a competitive game" (August)? Isn't this a bit of Intellectual Elitism? I have eleven O' levels and three A’ levels (and sundry other pieces of decorated paper), but that doesn't prove my innate intelligence (whatever that is) any more than it makes me a nice person to be with.

This said. I am writing partly to say how impressed I was by the standard of the articles in your magazine: good clear prose and not too much jargon. As a committed feminist. I've been reading Spare Rib for the last two years or so, and find the quality of the writing very depressing. Surely we raving lefties don't have to be semi-illiterate?
Keep up the good work.
